Volunteering

Members and non-members are encouraged to get involved through volunteer opportunities. Arnica has had a long and successful history of working with numerous volunteers with a board range of skills. Often these opportunities allow Arnica to act as a mentor, helping members of our community develop skills working with gallery operations. Volunteers who wish to receive notice with opportunities can contact arnicaarc@gmail.com with “Volunteering” in the subject line. You can also be notified by joining our Facebook group here, Signup here, or Volunteer Kamloops here.

Volunteer opportunities available through Arnica include:

Artist Talks

Artists interested in acquiring experience presenting their work to an audience are encouraged to connect with Arnica and arrange an event. Experienced volunteers are available to work alongside, helping to instill confidence in emerging artists trying to develop presentation experience. Arnica is happy to offer an honorarium to speakers when funding is available. Volunteers interested in coordinating an artist talk by bringing in an artist should contact Arnica.

Board of Directors

Arnica is governed by a volunteer board of directors consisting mainly of artists and art professionals. Positions on the board become available each year and are voted on by Arnica’s members at our Annual General Meeting. Each year Arnica looks to fill the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Student Representative and numerous Member at Large positions from amongst our membership. Members interested becoming a part of Arnica’s board of directors must attend the AGM and nominate themselves, or have another member nominate them. The terms of reference for the various positions will be found here soon:

  • President
  • Vice President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Student Representative
  • Member at Large

Exhibition Setup/Striking

The tasks involved with setting it up or striking each exhibition are different. Occasionally Arnica requires volunteers to help with more elaborate or time-consuming installations. This is a good opportunity for volunteers support Arnica and develop their skills with installation in a gallery while working with other volunteers and Arnica’s staff.

Fundraising Committee

Being part of a fundraising committee is one of the most important ways to support an artist-run centre. The fundraising committee meets as necessary to plan past fundraiser events that have proven effective and discusses new ideas for generating revenue. Volunteers interested in joining the committee can contact the committee chair or Gallery Coordinator and arrange to be at the next meeting.

Gallery Attendant

For many years, Arnica has had volunteers to sit in the gallery as attendants. This has been essential in the operation of Arnica and still is, even with the recent implementation of staff. Arnica’s administration uses the Signup.com calendar to organize gallery attendant’s shifts in half day allotments. A typical attendant shift is 4 hours Monday-Friday and 3 hours on Saturday.  We have an accommodating schedule. Arnica is open Tuesday – Friday 10-5pm, Saturday 10-4pm and will have all available openings posted on VolunteerSpot (link). Please volunteer for whatever you are comfortable with; it can be once a month to 2 times a week or more. There are few monetary transactions because the Arnica gallery is FREE, but occasionally memberships are paid in cash/cheque. Arnica will arrange to meet new volunteers before their first shift to outline duties, tour the building and clarify the exhibition. Most guests can read the show brochure, though we always appreciate a friendly face and conversation with the public. Morning Attendant duties:

  • Opening the gallery
  • Turning on the lights
  • Turning on the required equipment
  • Greeting visitors
  • Taking membership fees
  • Answering questions whenever possible
  • Other tasks depending on the exhibition

Attendants in the afternoon are responsible for:

  • Closing the gallery
  • Turning off the lights
  • Turning off the required equipment
  • Greeting visitors
  • Taking membership fees
  • Answering questions whenever possible
  • Other tasks depending on the exhibition

Operations Volunteer – We also need many other types of volunteers. If you have specific skills you wish to teach or learn, or hone, we can address these with you.  For example: carpentry, secretarial, PR, computer programming, or any other skills. You’d be amazed at how unique and valuable our volunteers are! I hope you will be part of Arnica’s amazing volunteer team, and share your own talents with us.
